In the middle years of the 17th century, Britain was a country at war with itself. The media as we understand them today did not exist, so news travelled at the speed of people's movements around the country.
The Household depends upon visitors for news, many goods and specialist skills. Those who may come to the house include friends and visiting family; professionals such as the physician; tradesmen such as carpenters, tailors and painters; and even wandering rogues and vagabonds seeking charity.
