For a house to function effectively it requires a range of servants. For example, one of the lowliest, yet still important, is the potboy. Because of the poor conditions potboys are amongst the most likely to seek employment elsewhere - perhaps even with the army.
The potboy is responsible for maintaining the kitchen fire, ensuring a good supply of wood for the temperatures demanded by Cook. He normally sleeps in front of the fire to ensure that it is maintained at all times. His other duties include basic cleaning of kitchen equipment, as seen here.
